根据Gerald Durrell《希腊三部曲》改编，讲述上个世纪三十年代德雷尔一家从英国搬到希腊科孚岛定居，单身母亲与四个孩子的暖心日常。Louisa decides to make money by selling produce at the local market, where she is not very successful but meets dashing Englishman Hugh Jarvis. A less welcome encounter is with abrasive new landlady Vasilia, who confiscates the furniture until the rent is paid. Louisa's solution is to create traditional British fare to sell and is grateful to Spiros for sharpening her sales technique. Gerry is more concerned with breeding otters whilst Margo, having failed to woo a young monk, considers becoming a nun. Louisa is charmed by Hugh but fears his interest in her is making ex-girlfriend Vasilia jealous and intent on making trouble for her.
