真夏の島。父を海で亡くした小学生のたかしは、祖父の国松から漁を教わる。そこへ、東京での生活に疲れた悦子が、娘のかおりを連れて帰郷して来る。かおりは祖父の徳一と祖母のつねに大歓迎され、島の子供たちとも次第にうちとける。さらに、古道具屋のめずらしやはかおりに海の図鑑をくれ、彼女の海への興味は深まっていく。たかしの母・良江や、村一番の腕利き漁師コンゾは悦子の昔の同級生で、海とともに暮らす彼らが悦子には眩しい。一方、村にリゾートホテルを建てる計画が起こり、怪しげな不動産屋がうろついたりするが、村人たちは海は自分たちの財産だと譲らない。祭りが過ぎ、台風が来る。ある日、こっそり小舟で沖へ出たかおりたちは、潮に流され、見知らぬ島へ到着。不安な一夜を過ごすが、翌朝大人たちに助けられる。やがて夏は終わり、かおりは素晴らしい思い出を胸に東京に帰っていくのだった。...Makoto Shiina directs this restrained lyrical tale about a mother and her school-aged daughter. Both hail from the neon-drenched urban sprawl of Tokyo, but move to the remote Ishigaki island in the Ryukyu archipelago. Though the islanders watch Japanese TV and play Japanese video games, their culture remains exotic and their dialect almost unintelligible to the average Japanese. Initially, the girl's strange city-slicker ways provoke derision from her classmates. Soon she and her mother learn to love the idyllic tropical isle.
